What is Swedish Massage?
Swedish massage is one of the most commonly practiced modalities of massage. It was developed in 1830 by Per Henrik Ling. The primary goal of Swedish Massage is to inspire relaxation. Through research, it has been shown that a 45 minutes session of Swedish Massage can increase the blood oxygen level, increase circulation and white cell blood count, and decrease muscle toxins while improving range of motion. Throughout the session, a massage therapist will use these five main strokes: effleurage (sliding movements), petrissage (kneading movements), friction, vibration, and tapotement (percussion). On some occasions, the practitioner may incorporate passive and active joint movements such as stretching and bending. It is important to feel comfortable with communicating with the therapist throughout the massage and inform them of any discomfort you experience so that they can adjust their strokes as needed.
